Mission and Objectives

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UNEP Reginal Office for West Asia is located in Beirut, Lebanon.

Context

The projects aim to enhance climate change awareness and knowledge in Qatar, directly assisting in national planning and policy formulation by mainstreaming vulnerability, adaptation, and mitigation measures. Integrating insights from environmental psychology, the initiatives also seek to understand and influence public perceptions, attitudes, and behavioral responses to climate risks, thereby fostering more sustainable lifestyle choices and stronger community engagement. Key stakeholders include the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, governmental agencies, and research institutions. Expected outcomes are enhanced national capacity for climate change reporting and transparency, improved integration of climate considerations into development plans, and increased stakeholder understanding of climate impacts and mitigation. Ultimately, these reports will contribute to Qatar’s social and economic development by reducing climate vulnerabilities, providing mitigation options in key sectors, and strengthening emissions reduction tracking towards its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
