Mission and Objectives

Adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2024, the Pact for the Future strengthens the UN’s commitment to the YPS agenda. Action 20(c) of the Pact explicitly calls for a second independent progress study on Youth, Peace and Security, to be completed by the end of the 80th session of the General Assembly. This second progress study aims to further document and assess the positive contributions of young people to peace processes and conflict resolution, particularly given the rapidly evolving global context since 2018. It will also provide vital evidence of successful practices and lessons learned, assess the effectiveness of various funding mechanisms, and youth inclusion policies implemented since 2018. The study will also identify persistent barriers that continue to hinder meaningful youth participation in peace processes. New data will be collected from various sources to provide quantitative analysis and evidence to support the research and findings of the study. The Second Independent Progress Study is administered by PBSO in partnership with UNFPA and the UN Office on Youth as the UN Secretariat on Youth, Peace and Security.

Context

The United Nations is launching the largest survey on youth perspectives of peace and security for young people all over the world. The main objective of this survey is to check in with young people all over the world on their experiences of and perspectives of peace and security, including their priorities, hopes and fears. The survey also hopes to identify the spaces through which young people can be best heard and supported by international institutions, to strengthen the mechanisms through which young people can connect with national and international organisations. This survey will feed into the Second Independent Progress Study on Youth Peace and Security and presents an opportunity to articulate the experiences and demands of young people before global leaders and to inform global policy and strategy on youth, peace and security in the future. The Big Listen is a central piece of the Second Independent Progress Study on Youth, Peace and Security which was requested by member states as part of the Pact for the Future and as a follow up to the first progress study, The Missing Peace and Security Council Resolution 2250 (2015). The Big Listen campaign is managed by the UN Secretariat on Youth, Peace and Security. Please ensure that it is safe to participate and circulate this survey in your community/country, the UN cannot provide protection in the event of security risks. This survey will not be collecting, processing or storing identifying information.
