Mission and Objectives

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Through the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) in Bangkok and a number of country and multi-country offices as well as programme presences across the region, UN Women builds on a long history of support to governments, civil society and other actors to promote gender equality and empower all women and girls. We stand behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life, focusing on five priority areas: addressing gender perspectives in intergovernmental processes; women’s political participation and leadership; enhancing women’s economic empowerment; ending violence against women and girls; and promoting women’s participation in peace and security and humanitarian action.

Context

A strategic partnership is under way between the Government of the Republic of Korea, through its Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF), and UN Women to enhance women’s full, equal and meaningful participation and leadership in decision-making in South and South-East Asia. By translating global commitments into concrete actions at national and regional levels in Asia, the partnership seeks to reinforce national and regional commitments to gender equality, women’s rights and inclusive governance. The partnership has a strong focus on ensuring that the voices and priorities of women inform decision-making, empowering all women, including young women and women from marginalized groups to participate in public life, as well as strengthening women’s civil society organizations. As part of this work, UN Women has launched a podcast series called Women in Power. The series aims to highlight women’s leadership in all its diversity, challenging stereotypes concerning the representation of women in power and decision-making in Asia and the Pacific.
