Mission and Objectives

UNFPA has been working in Yemen since early 1970s. UNFPA’s 5th Country Programe for Yemen from 2012-2015 has been extended since 2016. The current country programme has been directed to a humanitarian response upon the activation of a Level 3 emergency response in Yemen on 1 July 2015. UNFPA’s response in Yemen aims at meeting the reproductive health needs of women and girls and ensuring that they are protected from gender-based violence, working in close partnership with local authorities, non-governmental partners and UN agencies across the country.

Context

The Population & Development Assistant will support UNFPA’s Population and Development (P&D) portfolio while undergoing structured coaching and on-the-job training under the supervision of the International Programme Analyst.

Task Description

Under the guidance of the International UNV, the International Programme Analys will: 1. Technical and Analytical Support ●Support data collection, analysis, and visualization related to population dynamics, fertility, youth, migration, and demographic trends. ● Assist in the preparation of analytical briefs, presentations, and technical notes aligned with UNFPA P&D priorities. ● Contribute to reviews of national policies, strategies, and plans related to population and development. 2. Programme and Planning Support ● Support integration of population data and demographic analysis into UNFPA programmes, AWPs, CPDs, and UNSDCF-related processes. ● Assist in monitoring progress against P&D-related outputs and indicators. ● Support reporting to donors, HQ, and inter-agency coordination mechanisms as required. 3. Capacity Development and Learning (Core Function) ● Participate in structured mentoring and coaching sessions led by the International UNV. ● Undertake on-the-job learning through shadowing, joint assignments, and progressive task delegation. ● Support documentation of methodologies, tools, and lessons learned to strengthen institutional memory. 4. Coordination and Partnerships ● Support coordination with national counterparts (e.g. CSO, line ministries), UN agencies, and partners on P&D-related initiatives. ● Assist in organizing technical meetings, workshops, and learning events related to population and development. 5. Knowledge Management ● Contribute to maintaining organized repositories of P&D data, analyses, and technical resources. ● Support dissemination of knowledge products and learning materials within the Country Office and with partners. Expected Results ●Strengthened national capacity in population and development analysis and programming. ●Improved integration of demographic evidence into UNFPA planning and advocacy. ●A progressively skilled national P&D resource able to assume increased responsibility over time. ●Documented knowledge and tools contributing to institutional continuity. Learning and Development Focus This assignment is explicitly developmental. The National UNV is expected to: ● Develop core competencies in population analysis, data interpretation, and programme support. ● Build familiarity with UNFPA systems, planning cycles, and strategic frameworks. ● Progressively take on higher-level analytical and coordination responsibilities under supervision.
