Context

UN RCO is seeking five Online Volunteers to support daily news monitoring, collection, summarization, and translation of articles from reputable news sources under the immediate supervision of the RCO. These activities are essential for understanding perceptions of the UN and its work, identifying risks and opportunities, and informing decision-making, ultimately strengthening the UN’s positioning as a crucial partner in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals in Suriname. Volunteers will receive feedback on their collaboration and quality of work, a certificate of appreciation upon successful completion, and credit for their support where applicable.

Task Description

UN RCO is seeking 5 Online Volunteers who, under the immediate supervision of the RCO, will support with day-to-day monitoring, collecting, summarizing, and translating of news articles from reputable news sources. News monitoring and social listening are key activities to understand perceptions around the UN and its work, identify risks and opportunity, and inform decision-marking, among other goals. These activities are instrumental for strengthening the positioning of the United Nations in the country as a crucial partner for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals in Suriname. Suriname: 5 volunteers (1-2 volunteers working per day on alternate shifts). 1. Monitoring: Track and gather relevant news reports daily from designated local, regional, and international sources. 2. Translation: Translate news articles from Dutch to English. 3. Summarizing: Provide clear and concise summaries of news reports, highlighting key developments. 4. Collaboration: Coordinate closely with team members to ensure comprehensive coverage and avoid duplication. 5. Reporting: Submit daily reports by 1:00 PM (Suriname time) to the designated focal point.

Skills and experience
Qualifications/Requirements: Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, languages, or related discipline preferred; Experience: 1 year of relevant experience in public relations, communications, writing/editing or related field; Research, summarizing, and monitoring skills Translation skills: Proven ability to translate from Dutch to English while maintaining the original context and meaning; Attention to detail: Strong attention to detail to ensure high-quality translations and summaries; Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, Google Docs, etc.); Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines. Previous copy-editing, proofreading or translation experience preferred.
