Mission and objectives

UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, help meet their basic needs, and expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. Guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF works to establish children's rights as enduring ethical principles and internationally recognized standards of behaviour towards children. The organization believes that the survival, protection, and development of children are universal development imperatives that are fundamental to human progress. To achieve these objectives, UNICEF mobilizes political will and resources to support countries, particularly developing nations, in placing children at the center of policies and services while strengthening their capacity to respond effectively to the needs of children and their families. UNICEF is committed to ensuring special protection for the most disadvantaged children, including those affected by conflict, natural disasters, extreme poverty, violence, exploitation, and disabilities. In humanitarian emergencies, UNICEF acts swiftly to protect children's rights and well-being, working closely with United Nations partners and humanitarian organizations to provide rapid and effective assistance that alleviates the suffering of children and their caregivers. As a non-partisan organization, UNICEF delivers its cooperation without discrimination, giving priority to the most vulnerable children and the countries facing the greatest challenges. Through its programmes and partnerships, UNICEF promotes gender equality and the equal rights of women and girls, supporting their full participation in the political, social, and economic development of their communities. Working alongside governments, civil society, international organizations, and other stakeholders, UNICEF contributes to the achievement of sustainable human development goals and advances the vision of peace, social progress, and human dignity enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
