Mission and Objectives
To meet the demands posed by major global trends in agricultural development and challenges faced by member nations, FAO has identified key priorities on which it is best placed to intervene. A comprehensive review of the Organization’s comparative advantages was undertaken, which enabled strategic objectives to be set—representing the main areas of work on which FAO will concentrate its efforts in striving to achieve its vision and global goals.
Africa has three Regional Initiatives based on an in-depth cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary review of regional issues and trends as well as alignment with regional commitments. These are:
Working with African Union commitments to ending hunger by 2025
Pursuing inclusive agricultural transformation agenda to reduce poverty; and
Enhancing resilience of livelihoods and production systems
Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through FAO Strategic Framework by supporting the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems, for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.
The Regional Office for Africa (RAF) is responsible for leading FAO's response to regional priorities for Gender and the implementation of the Policy on Gender Equality at a regional level. The Regional Office supports regional policy dialogue and supports capacity development and resource mobilization.
The communication and gender volunteer will support in preparation of communication and advocacy materials and knowledge management within the RAF gender team. In close collaboration with Office of Communications (OCC) branches and appropriate Communication focal points.
Task Description
We are seeking the support of one Online Volunteer to help us raise awareness and visibility on FAO's response to regional priorities for Gender. For this purpose the selected Online Volunteer, under the supervision and guidance of FAO Regional Senior Gender Expert, will support by:
- Provide support to the production and dissemination of communication and advocacy materials, including brochures, project briefs, policy briefs, posters, website pages, and other visibility products for advocacy, raising awareness, and dissemination of knowledge products in close coordination with technical officers and under the guidance of RAF communication team;
- Support development of communication and advocacy materials for the International Year of the Woman farmer in consultation;
- Support in the design and dissemination of quarterly Gender and Inclusion Highlights for dissemination of GFP networks; § Provide support in the design and delivery social media campaigns via @FAOAfrica for targeted audiences;
- Contribute to the development of written and audio-visual communication products, including photo galleries and video products, under the guidance of RAF communication team;
- Support in drafting, editing, proofreading and fact-checking newsletters, briefs, speeches, and publications related to the teams’ activities and FAO’s work with key partners § Provide support in organizing workshops and meetings and preparing reports
- Ensure that all communication products comply with global FAO key messages, terminology, standards, and guidelines.
Selected Online Volunteer will be provided with information and material relevant and necessary to perform the task.
Online Volunteers will have the opportunity to network with the RAF gender team. In close collaboration with Office of Communications (OCC) branches and appropriate Communication focal points and develop and hone their skills in gender, communications and related areas while contributing to positive change through raising awareness among the target communities.

Skills and experience
Candidates should have previous experience in developing communication outreach with excellent communication and writing/editing skills.
Previous experience in raising awareness among target audiences is an advantage.
Good knowledge of online marketing and media tools and channels is highly desired.
Candidates should be students enrolled in an under-graduate or post-graduate degree programme in a bona de educational institution at the time of application, or graduates in marketing, communication, gender, development studies or other social sciences.
