What the volunteer will do
Mission and objectives
Sudan became a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1956. Since establishing its country office in 1977, FAO has worked closely with the Government of Sudan and partners to transform the country’s agrifood systems by promoting climate-smart agriculture, enhancing food security and nutrition, and advancing sustainable rural development.
Through technical expertise, policy guidance, and community-driven strategic programmes, FAO is helping Sudan build a more resilient, food-secure future for all.
Context
The UN Volunteer will be assigned to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Sudan Country Office and will be part of the Communication Unit under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative. The incumbent will work closely with programme and project teams, technical specialists, the Regional Communication Office, and the Office of Corporate Communication (OCC) to enhance the visibility of FAO's interventions and achievements in Sudan. The assignment supports FAO Sudan's Country Programming Framework (CPF) and contributes to FAO's Strategic Framework 2022–31, which aims to transform agrifood systems to be more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. The Communication Specialist will lead the development and implementation of communication strategies, media engagement, digital communication, and visibility activities for FAO programmes and projects across Sudan. Key stakeholders include government ministries and institutions, United Nations agencies, development partners, donors, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academic institutions, local communities, media organizations, and beneficiaries of FAO-supported projects. The assignment will contribute to increased awareness of FAO's work, strengthened stakeholder engagement, enhanced donor visibility, and improved public understanding of FAO's role in supporting food security, livelihoods, resilience, and sustainable agricultural development in Sudan. Additional information
Living conditions and remarks
Port Sudan is currently one of the safest operational areas in Sudan, with relatively stable security compared to other conflict-affected regions. Access is possible via Port Sudan Airport with limited commercial and UNHAS flights. The climate is hot and humid, especially in summer months. Modest dress is culturally expected, and alcohol is strictly prohibited. Accommodation options are limited and costly due to high demand. Basic food and water are available but expensive, and power outages are frequent. Medical facilities are functional but limited in capacity—serious cases may require evacuation. Banking services are minimal with limited access to cash; mobile money is used occasionally. Internet and telecom services are available but often unreliable.
Sudan is a unique country and is a unique operation. It provides an interesting and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness, as well as stamina and commitment. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions, involving physical hardship and little comfort, are essential.
