Mission and objectives

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the leading development organization within the United Nations system, dedicated to ending poverty, reducing inequalities, protecting the environment, and addressing the impacts of climate change. In Chile, we work with stakeholders and partners across all sectors of national activity (public institutions, private sector, civil society, and academia) to provide innovative solutions to the country’s main development challenges. We promote citizen participation and the quality of institutions; foster inclusive growth that also incorporates a sustainable financial perspective; strengthen territorial development efforts at the subnational level; and increase climate ambition through local and regional projects, among many other areas of action. We reaffirm our commitment to the country’s development by strengthening our role as the integrative agency for development within the United Nations system, enhancing our inter-agency work, promoting initiatives at the subnational level, and addressing the challenges posed by territorial, socioeconomic, environmental, and gender inequalities, among others.

Context

The Republic of Korea has a long-standing strategic partnership with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, as its largest full-funding partner, with a strong focus on education, digital transformation, and human and institutional capacity development, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Quality Education. Within this framework, Korean-funded cooperation emphasizes people-centred, gradual, and sustainable interventions, using pilot initiatives as learning spaces to generate evidence and strengthen local ownership before scaling up. Chile has made meaningful progress in educational digitalization through public policies and national initiatives aimed at integrating technology into the school system. However, challenges remain in ensuring the effective pedagogical integration of digital tools, reducing territorial and structural gaps, and consolidating capacities at the school and local management levels. This context presents a concrete opportunity to implement a small-scale pilot project in a Chilean school, supported by a UN Volunteer funded by the Republic of Korea, who would act as a technical and pedagogical facilitator in close coordination with local education stakeholders. The proposed pilot would focus on adapting selected lessons from the South Korean education technology model to the Chilean context, prioritizing teacher empowerment, improved education management, and the responsible use of digital tools, rather than the replication of large-scale or highly complex systems. This approach is consistent with Korea’s experience in cooperation initiatives supported by UNESCO and other multilateral partners, where pilot projects enable institutional learning, contextual adaptation, and sustainability. In this context, the engagement of a UN Volunteer funded by the Republic of Korea represents a strategic opportunity for Chile to strengthen local capacities at the school level, promote South–South knowledge exchange, and advance a gradual, inclusive, and sustainable approach to educational digital transformation aligned with United Nations principles.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of Head of the ICT Unit, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: 1. Support a school-level pilot on educational technology Support a small pilot project in a Chilean school to improve the practical and pedagogical use of digital tools, adapting ideas from the South Korean experience to the local context. ________________________________________ 2. Work with teachers and school teams to build capacity Collaborate closely with teachers and school leadership to strengthen their skills and confidence in using digital tools for teaching and school management, always keeping teachers at the center of the learning process. ________________________________________ 3. Document lessons learned to support sustainability Help capture lessons learned and good practices from the pilot, contributing to institutional learning and providing inputs for possible future replication or scaling. During the first month of the assignment, the UN Volunteer will work closely with his/her direct supervisor to finalize an agreed-upon work plan. The work plan should outline key objectives and activities and include regular check ins with the supervisor to review progress and receive performance

Living conditions and remarks
Chile (Santiago) offers relatively stable living conditions, with good access to healthcare, education, and digital infrastructure compared to the regional average. While the cost of living is higher than in many neighboring countries, especially in Santiago, it remains moderate by OECD standards. Quality of life is generally good, although challenges persist in areas such as urban security, inequality, and environmental pollution in some cities.
