Mission and Objectives

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. We work with partners to integrate qualified, highly motivated and well supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism. UNV has five Regional Offices in Amman (Arab States, Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States), Bangkok (Asia and the Pacific), Dakar (West and Central Africa), Nairobi (East and Southern Africa) and Panama City (Latin America and the Caribbean). The regional offices are the first entry point for partners wishing to engage with UNV. They offer UNV services and solutions to government partners, UN entities, civil society and the private sector, and takes the lead in scoping and delivering UNV advisory services on volunteer infrastructure. They also provide oversight and strategic guidance to UNV's field units in the regions.

Context

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme in the East and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) works to promote volunteerism as a powerful driver of sustainable development. With an expanding portfolio of assignments, regional campaigns and partner engagements, UNV ESARO produces regular communication materials aimed at highlighting the impact of volunteerism across the region. As part of the International Volunteer Year 2026, UNV ESARO is implementing Journeys of Inspiration, a flagship photobook and digital storytelling campaign featuring first-person reflections from senior United Nations (UN) leaders whose professional journeys were shaped by volunteerism and service. The campaign responds to a gap in awareness and engagement on volunteerism among senior audiences and aims to position volunteerism as a practical pathway to leadership and a contributor to peace and development outcomes. Online Volunteers will gain hands-on experience in digital advocacy, content development, contribute to a high‑visibility global campaign with real‑world impact, and receive a certificate of appreciation in recognition of their valuable contribution.
