Mission and Objectives

UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is a specialized agency dedicated to strengthening international cooperation in the fields of education, science, culture, and information. UNESCO set standards, produce tools and develop knowledge to create solutions to some of the greatest challenges of our time, and foster a world of greater equality and peace. Protecting biodiversity, responding to artificial intelligence, advancing quality education, safeguarding heritage, and ensuring access to reliable information are some examples of the work that UNESCO does with its 194 Member States across the globe. UNESCO aims to strengthen peace and security by encouraging collaboration among nations in education, science, culture, and communication. Its mission emphasizes the development of universal respect for justice, human rights, and fundamental freedoms for all people, without distinction of race, sex, language, or religion. The organization achieves this by promoting mutual knowledge and understanding, supporting educational development, protecting cultural heritage, and facilitating the free flow of ideas and information across borders.

Context

Class Map is currently being utilised by over 250 non-state schools across 12 states and regions in Myanmar. The app functions as a simplified EMIS, enabling schools to record daily attendance, develop school improvement plans, and report on emergencies. A recent review of the application identified the need for further enhancements to improve functionality, user experience, data quality, and reporting features, as well as strengthened user support during scale-up. The UNV will contribute to addressing these gaps by supporting system refinements, coordinating with technical partners, and assisting with the effective rollout and adoption of ClassMap in target schools.

Additional Information

Living conditions and remarks
The UNESCO Myanmar Project Office is located around 4km from the Yangon city center (Sule Pagoda), in a safe and tranquil area close to the UNDP compound and two major Embassies (Germany and Japan) as well as one of the most popular places in Yangon – Kandawgyi Lake. The office complies with the safety and security requirements of the United Nations Department of Safety & Security (UNDSS). An increasing number of apartments with one or two bedrooms can be found in Yangon. Real estate agents are easily available to support the search for housing options. Another way is to join relevant Facebook groups, where property owners usually advertise vacant apartments. For a one- or two-bedroom apartment, the rent may cost around USD 500 to USD 1,500 per month, depending on the conditions and location. Generally, Yangon city is relatively safe compared to other cities of similar size in the region. Usually, the most convenient way to commute is by taxi, which is about USD 2 one way from city center to the office. Plenty of taxis can be hailed in the streets or arranged using mobile applications such as GrabTaxi easily. Public buses, less than USD 0.2 one way, are also available but usually it may take at least ten minutes to walk to the office from the nearest bus stop. Having a private car is not necessary in Yangon.
