Mission and Objectives

UN Women’s Fiji Multi-Country Office (MCO) works with governments and civil society organisations across 14 Pacific Island countries and territories to address gender inequality, empower women and build more inclusive societies. UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. The Fiji Multi Country Office (MCO) covers 14 Pacific countries, with field offices/presence in 6 countries, and five ‘focus countries’ (Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Samoa). Each field presence is led by a national Country Programme Coordinator. UN Women, in partnership with Pacific Islands Governments, regional organizations, CSOs, donors and UN agencies, focuses on delivering within four interlinked programme areas: - Women’s Political Empowerment and Leadership (WPEL) - Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) - Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG) - Gender and Protection in Humanitarian Action (GPiHA) and Disaster Risk Reduction

Context

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the United Nations Charter, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, the empowerment of women, and the achievement of gender equality. This UNV assignment is part of UN Women’s Fiji Multi-Country Office (MCO), which covers 14 Pacific Island countries and territories. Under its Strategic Note 2023–2027, the MCO focuses on governance and participation, women’s economic empowerment, ending violence against women and girls, and climate resilience. The assignment supports the implementation and coordination of UN Women’s country programme in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), working closely with government institutions, UN agencies, civil society, and development partners. The UN Volunteer is accountable for gender-related coordination, advocacy, and the provision of technical assistance in FSM.

Task Description

Under the supervision of the UN Women Representative, the UN Volunteer will: - Provide high-quality advisory and programme development support - Analyze political, social, and economic trends relevant to gender equality - Lead design, plan, and implement programme activities in FSM - Prepare technical reports, briefs, and progress updates Inter-agency coordination: - Lead and represent UN Women in coordination mechanisms - Ensure gender mainstreaming across UN frameworks - Lead preparation of strategic and technical reports Partnerships and resource mobilization: - Build partnerships with government, donors, UN agencies, and civil society - Identify funding opportunities and lead resource mobilization efforts, including donor engagement and proposal development Advocacy and knowledge management: - Lead and implement advocacy strategies - Document best practices and lessons learned - Contribute to knowledge networks and communities of practice

Skills and experience
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in inter-agency coordination as well as development programme/project design, strategic planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) in international development contexts - Experience in gender equality and women’s empowerment programming, including integration of gender perspectives across development interventions - Track record of coordination of multidisciplinary teams and engagement with diverse stakeholders at national and international levels - Sound knowledge of UN systems, policies, and programming procedures, including inter-agency coordination mechanisms, is an asset - Experience working in the Pacific region or in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) contexts is a strong asset - Advanced computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and experience with web-based management and ERP systems (e.g., Oracle Cloud)

Living conditions and remarks
Pohnpei offers a unique island environment with rich cultural heritage. Living conditions are generally modest, with limited infrastructure compared to urban settings. Access to healthcare, banking, and international travel is available but may be limited. The climate is tropical with high humidity and rainfall. The assignment provides an enriching professional and cultural experience but requires adaptability, resilience, and the ability to work in a geographically remote setting with limited resources.
