Mission and Objectives
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the UN’s sexual and reproductive health agency, mandated by the UN General Assembly to ensure every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled. It works in over 150 countries to achieve three transformative results by 2030: zero unmet need for contraception, zero preventable maternal deaths, and zero gender-based violence.
UNFPA’s work is grounded in the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). The core mandate includes:
Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights: Promoting universal access to reproductive health, including family planning, maternal health, and HIV prevention.
Gender Equality: Ending gender-based violence (GBV), harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM), and empowering women and girls.
Youth Empowerment: Supporting adolescents and youth to transition healthily into adulthood and reach their potential.
Population Data: Assisting countries in collecting, analyzing, and using demographic data for development planning, including census support.
Context
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the lead UN agency working to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. As part of its 2026-2029 strategic plan, UNFPA is committed to expanding its humanitarian response capacity to safeguard the lives of women, adolescents, and youth, particularly adolescent girls. This effort includes addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and mental health and psychosocial issues. The UNFPA West and Central Africa Regional Office is working to adapt the "Girls Are in Action" (GAIA) Toolkit—originally developed by UNICEF for the Mozambique context—for a successful rollout across West and Central Africa. To ensure implementing partners and frontline facilitators have the culturally sensitive, highly visual tools they need to support the safety, health, and socio-emotional skills of adolescent girls, we require a professional layout mirroring the high-quality English version using the newly completed French text. Your contribution will directly support our regional efforts towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals 5 (Gender Equality) and 17 (Partnerships).
Task Description
We are seeking two Online Volunteers to support us by migrating our newly translated French text into the finalized graphic design layout of the "Girls Are in Action" (GAIA) Toolkit Curriculum. The toolkit is a comprehensive life-skills curriculum designed for adolescent girls and community members in emergency settings. To this end, the Online Volunteer is asked to:
1) Replicate the design, styling, color palette, icons, and graphic elements of the original English curriculum (338 pages) into a new document featuring the French translation.
2) Adjust structural layouts, text boxes, and formatting to accommodate French language expansion gracefully while keeping page alignments functional.
3) Format or recreate visual components, diagrams, and instructional cards (such as the communication guides, problem-solving flows, and circle charts) to display the French text seamlessly.
4) Ensure the final product is clean, professional, readable, and ready for digital rollout and black-and-white field printing.
The selected Online Volunteers will be provided with the final French translation text, the original English PDF/source files, structural templates, and programmatic guidance as needed. This assignment requires working as a team between the two volunteers as they will have to divide the documents in two parts for a more manageable workload, but alignment on final graphic design. A few checks in with the manager to follow up on the task will also be requested. The volunteers will be exposed to the work of the Communication Team at UNFPA if they wish to know
