Sudan is currently armed conflict and infectious hazards whose interaction has contributed to the increased risk of disease outbreaks among vulnerable communities. According to Federal Ministry of Health epidemiological report, the country is experiencing outbreak of vector borne and vaccine preventable disease outbreaks. Vector borne diseases especially Malaria and Dengue Fever are endemic to Sudan. Malaria cases have increased since week 1 of 2026 with over 597735 cases reported in 12 states while Dengue fever cases have also increase in number in 6 states since week 1. The increased risk of vector borne diseases is due to poor sanitation, climate change that favors increased vector density and conflict led displacement that has led to rapid population movements. Conflict has led to weakening of the health system that had led to increased populations with limited access to primary health care services including vaccination services. Measles outbreaks have been reported from 8 states while suspected diphtheria has been reported in Darfur and suspected meningitis reported from three states since the beginning of 2026. The alerts of these disease outbreaks are detected and reported using Indicator bases surveillance and Venet Based surveillance systems implemented in the country in addition to electronic Early Warning Alert and Response Network implemented in Darfur and 10 other states. The alerts detected are investigated and validated by multi skilled rapid response teams at state and locality level. However, these surveillance systems are not performing according to expected standards due to break down of telecommunication infrastructure, migration of health workers. WHO therefore intends to support the FMOH with technical expertise aimed at improving epidemic data collection, analysis and dissemination through periodic information products in a timely manner to inform partners on the implementation strategies to implement to contain the spread of outbreaks.

In the context of the Sudan country office health emergency program, the candidate will support the development and implementation of health-related information systems for the collection, collation, analysis, tracking, and dissemination of epidemic intelligence information. The emergency Program of WHO is mandated to support countries and coordinate international action to prevent, prepare for, detect, rapidly respond to, and recover from disease outbreaks and other acute public health emergencies. Description of duties: 1. Provide technical inputs in the development and review of electronic disease surveillance platforms and tools at national and subnational levels relevant for the strengthening of routine disease surveillance and response. 2. Support the development and review of training materials for the implementation of electronic disease surveillance platforms 3. Support the collection, analysis, production, and dissemination of data and health information products which include periodic situation reports, epidemiologic bulletins, rapid needs assessments, and health risk assessments. 4. Aggregate and maintain inter-country information from WHO and partners, including contact lists, performance monitoring, health indicator data, health situation data, and health response data. 5. Participate in the basic geographic analysis for health-related information, maps, and other reports (such as dashboards, SitReps, etc). 6. Provide information sharing between WHO, the Federal Ministry of Health, and Health cluster partners, and contribute to inter-sectoral dashboards and reports. 7. Participate in field epidemiological surveys if/where needed, such as mortality and vaccination coverage surveys. 8. Provide information management input into the planning and data/information management process, including data gathering and analysis, quality assurance, performance monitoring, information dissemination, and management. 9. Support and initiate the development of relevant studies and will perform advanced analysis using statistics. 10. Perform all other related duties as assigned.
