Mission and Objectives

UN Women (the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women), grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women officially commenced its mission at the beginning of 2025 in Uzbekistan. It was established at the strong request of the Government of Uzbekistan to guide and support the State’s gender equality and women’s empowerment initiatives. UN Women aims to accelerate the implementation of the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) agenda. To support this objective, new programme pillars have been identified, and several programmes are currently being implemented, including the Geder Responsive Budgeting (GRB) and Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) programmes funded by the EU Delegation in Uzbekistan, to which the UN Associate Volunteer will provide support.

Context

UN Women in Uzbekistan implements projects and conducts advocacy initiatives in the areas of Gender-Responsive Budgeting (GRB) and Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) at the national level. These initiatives aim to strengthen institutional capacities, enhance gender mainstreaming in public finance processes, and promote women’s equal participation in economic life. Programmes involve close coordination with government counterparts, development partners, consultants, and other stakeholders. Under the direct supervision of the Programme Analyst, the UN Volunteer contributes to programme implementation by supporting coordination processes, stakeholder engagement, consultant management, monitoring and reporting, and communication and visibility efforts. The assignment provides practical exposure to programme management, documentation processes, and results-based reporting within the UN Women framework..

Task Description

Under the direct supervision of Programme Analyst, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: Contribute to the implementation of programme activities related to the Gender Responsive Budgeting (GRB) and Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE) at national level. Support the initial template drafting of Terms of Reference for international and national consultants; monitor contract durations, and maintain related correspondence and documentation. Support the monitoring and reporting processes by compiling information, drafting sections of progress reports, and maintaining activity tracking tools. Assist in drafting official letters, ensuring proper documentation, maintaining contact databases, and filing programme-related materials in line with UN Women procedures. Participate in programme-related meetings, prepare minutes, and follow up on action points. Supports communication and visibility efforts by preparing content, human-interest stories, and social media materials related to the programme in coordination with the Communications Specialist. As part of a team the UNV assists in organizing workshops, trainings, consultations, and outreach activities, including logistical and administrative arrangements, in coordination with the Administration Assistant.

Skills and experience
Demonstrated interest in and/or experience promoting gender equality and women’s economic empowerment; Strong interest in providing programme support for the development and implementation of the projects of UN Women in Uzbekistan ie, women’s economic empowerment and gender responsive budgeting. Willingness to take initiative and assume responsibility in a dynamic team environment; Previous volunteer experience and/or exposure to different cultures through studies, internships, or international engagement is valued.

Living conditions and remarks
Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, has a continental climate and is a diverse city hosting various ethnic communities as well as international visitors. No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry; however, routine immunizations such as hepatitis A and B are recommended. The city offers relatively comfortable living conditions, with modern infrastructure, reliable public transportation, a wide range of Asian and Western restaurants, and stable internet access. Volunteers typically stay in rented apartments as they affordable comparing to other neighbouring country capitals with good living conditions. Tashkent is generally considered safe, with low levels of violent crime. Overall, UN Volunteers can expect a welcoming environment and a comfortable urban lifestyle.
