Mission and Objectives

Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration and is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. IOM is part of the United Nations system, as a related organization. IOM supports migrants across the world, developing effective responses to the shifting dynamics of migration and, as such, is a key source of advice on migration policy and practice. The organization works in emergency situations, developing the resilience of all people on the move, and particularly those in situations of vulnerability, as well as building capacity within governments to manage all forms and impacts of mobility. The Organization is guided by the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, including upholding human rights for all. Respect for the rights, dignity and well-being of migrants remains paramount.

Context

Within this framework, IOM will implement field-level data collection activities under the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) in close coordination with the Presidency of Migration Management (PMM) of the Ministry of Interior. These activities aim to generate reliable, timely, and actionable data to inform evidence-based decision-making and enhance programme effectiveness. The Field Data Collector will report to IOM and operate under the direct supervision of IOM’s Senior Project Associate and Field Coordinator, and the day-to-day guidance of the Field Team Leader. The UN Volunteer will support the implementation of field data collection activities, ensuring accurate and timely data gathering in line with established methodologies, tools, and ethical standards.

Task Description

Under direct supervision of IOM’s Senior Project Associate and Field Coordinator, the UN Volunteer will: - Conduct quantitative and qualitative interviews in the field with individuals from both host and migrant communities, in line with established methodologies - Ensure strict adherence to ethical standards, including confidentiality, informed consent, and data protection principles - Maintain regular communication with the Field Team Leader, reporting daily progress and flagging any issues, challenges, or incomplete interviews - Carry out interviews in a respectful, sensitive, and culturally appropriate manner - Accurately utilize designated mobile data collection tools and platforms in accordance with project guidelines - Submit daily updates to the Field Team Leader, including progress, challenges encountered, and key observations from the field - Perform any other related duties as assigned by the direct supervisor

Skills and experience
- Completion of secondary education (high school diploma) with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience; or A university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in a relevant field, which may substitute for the required three (3) years of experience - Previous experience in field data collection, surveys or assessments is desired. - Prior experience working with migrants, refugees, or displaced populations is a strong advantage. - Experience using digital data collection tools (e.g., KoboToolbox, ODK) is desirable. - Strong interpersonal and communication skills - Cultural sensitivity and ability to interact respectfully with people from different backgrounds - Ability to adapt to dynamic field conditions - Fluency in English is an advantage.

This is a volunteer assignment, not employment. The data collection activity will be held in Kocaeli, therefore candidates residing there and holding Turkish citizenship are highly encouraged to apply. Summary of National UN Volunteer Entitlements: (Paid in local currency) - Monthly Living Allowance (MLA) is USD 807 (Paid in Turkish Lira) - Private insurance: Health, dental, life, and dismemberment (coverage by CIGNA) As per UN’s diplomatic mission status, it is not included in National Security Institution’s (SGK) system, but can be only initiated on private basis. Notes: 1) The allowances are in no way to be understood as a salary, compensation, or reward in exchange for the volunteer work. 2) It's important to note that UNV assignments are volunteer assignments, not employment. 3) An additional IOM security clearance for the shortlisted candidates may be required for this assignment.
