Mission and Objectives

UNDP is the UN’s global development network, an organization that advocates for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience, and resources to help build resilient nations and improve the livelihoods of people. UNDP Gambia was established in 1975 as a development partner to provide technical assistance through advice, access to its global knowledge networks and financial support to implement government development frameworks to boost capacity development and promote national efforts to eradicate poverty and attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In The Gambia, UNDP supports national efforts for sustainable human development in line with the Gambian National Development Plan (NDP) 2018 – 2021 which is aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development/SDGs and the African Union Agenda 2063. To deliver on its mandate, UNDP partners with key government institutions and employs different means of actions including institutional capacity strengthening, harnessing strategic linkages, support to evidence-based policy formulation, planning and implementation, resource mobilization, support to national planning processes and mainstreaming of relevant issues.

Context

UNDP is the United Nations’ leading agency in ending poverty, reducing inequality, and addressing climate change. Operating in over 170 countries and territories, it works with governments, civil society, and development partners to deliver integrated and sustainable solutions that improve lives and protect the planet. Learn more at undp.org or follow @UNDP_TheGambia. As a key partner in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UNDP supports countries through institutional capacity development, evidence-based policymaking, resource mobilization, and national planning processes, ensuring that investments translate into inclusive and tangible benefits for citizens while aligning global commitments with national priorities. UNDP values diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from minority groups, indigenous communities, and persons with disabilities. All applications are treated with strict confidentiality. The organization maintains zero tolerance for sexual exploitation, abuse, harassment, and discrimination, and selected candidates are subject to rigorous reference and background checks. UNDP Gambia, established in 1975, provides technical assistance, knowledge-sharing, and financial support to advance national development objectives. Its programming is guided by The Gambia’s National Development Plan (NDP) 2024–2028, aligned with the Country Programme Document, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the African Union Agenda 2063. UNDP supports The Gambia’s democratic transition by promoting transparency, accountability, and responsive governance, strengthening citizen participation—especially among women, youth, and the diaspora—and expanding access to justice for marginalized groups in close collaboration with justice institutions and civil society. The EU-UNDP GREAT Initiative (“The Gambia’s Responsive and Accountable Democratic Transition Project”) contributes to democratic consolidation following the 22-year rule of former President Yahya Jammeh, which was marked by widespread human rights abuses. The initiative is anchored in national priorities, including the Government’s post-TRRC commitments outlined in the 2022 White Paper. The project aims to support constitutional and legislative reforms, enhance transitional justice and the rule of law, and strengthen local governance systems for inclusive and effective service delivery. These objectives align with SDG 16, NDP Strategic Priority 1 on good governance and citizen empowerment, and UNDP’s Strategic Plan Outcome 2 on democratic governance systems that meet citizens’ expectations for participation, development, and accountability. As part of this initiative, the EU-UNDP GREAT Project seeks to recruit a Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist to support the Judiciary. The Specialist will track project performance, monitor implementation against the Judiciary’s Work Plan, and ensure timely, accurate reporting to internal and external stakeholders. The role will be embedded within the Judiciary, reporting to the Judicial Secretary, and will coordinate closely with the EU-UNDP Project Manager to ensure contract compliance and effective delivery of project outputs.
