What the volunteer will do
Mission and objectives
The FAO Representation to the Arab Republic of Egypt opened in 1978. Over the past years, the Organization has participated in a large range of agricultural and rural development activities targeting Egypt’s specific needs. FAO’s support includes strategy, policy and institutional development, promotion of good agricultural practices and South-South Cooperation. The Organization has also taken the lead in supporting investments agriculture.
Context
Agrifood systems are a major employer of women globally, and the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region is no exception. Women are actively involved in all aspects of agrifood systems – from cultivation and harvesting to processing and trading. Despite women’s substantial contribution to food production and value chains, their work often remains undervalued and underrecognized, and persistent gender gaps continue to affect their productivity, income, and empowerment.
Following resolution, A/RES/78/279, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2026 International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF) and it was officially launched at FAO headquarters in Rome on December 4, 2025. The IYWF provides a critical opportunity to raise awareness of women’s roles and contributions across agrifood systems, highlight existing challenges, and advocate for gender-responsive policies and investments that support women’s empowerment and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In this context, FAO Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa (RNE) plans to engage Online UN Volunteers to support the dissemination and amplification of key messages and campaign materials related to the International Year of the Woman Farmer through social media platforms. The initiative aims to increase visibility, engagement, and outreach of FAO’s advocacy efforts by leveraging volunteers’ digital networks while ensuring alignment with FAO communication standards and messaging.
The content disseminated through this assignment will reflect FAO’s work and messaging across the entire Near East and North Africa (NENA) region, covering countries under the mandate of the FAO RNE.
Task description
Under the overall supervision of the Regional Gender Officer and the direct coordination of the Young Professional Officer (Communication), the Online Volunteers will:
- Amplify official FAO Headquarters and FAO RNE social media content related to the International Year of the Woman Farmer through their personal social media platforms (e.g. X/Twitter, LinkedIn, and, where appropriate, Instagram and TikTok).
- Amplify FAO social media content that highlights women farmers’ roles, challenges and contributions across the full NENA region, including regional, subregional and country-level initiatives led by FAO.
- Ensure that all shared content clearly attributes FAO as the source, respects copyright and branding guidelines, and states that the volunteer is amplifying official FAO messages.
- Share content in a timely manner, aligned with campaign priorities, key international days, and agreed messaging guidance.
- Maintain regular and clear communication with the Regional Gender Officer and the Young Professional Officer (Communication) regarding content shared, scheduling, and any questions related to messaging or compliance.
- Monitor engagement on shared content (e.g. likes, shares, comments, reach where available).
- Submit a brief engagement report every two weeks, including links and/or screenshots of shared content and basic engagement metrics, reflecting engagement with content covering multiple countries and thematic priorities across the RNE region, where applicable.
