Mission and Objectives

UNFPA’s mission is to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person can reach their full potential. The organization works to advance reproductive health and rights for all, promote gender equality, and support countries in using population data to achieve sustainable development. Its key objectives include improving access to quality maternal and reproductive health services, preventing and responding to gender-based violence and harmful practices, empowering women and young people through education and opportunities, and strengthening national systems for population data, including censuses and demographic analysis. UNFPA supports governments and partners to build inclusive, evidence-based policies that leave no one behind.

Context

UNFPA Uzbekistan works closely with the Government, civil society, UN agencies and development partners to advance reproductive health and rights, gender equality, youth empowerment, and population and development priorities. The Country Office supports national efforts to improve maternal health, expand access to family planning, prevent and respond to gender-based violence, promote positive social norms, and strengthen the use of population data for inclusive development. The UN Associate Volunteer will be engaged in an entry-level supporting role across programme components and office-wide initiatives. The assignment will provide an opportunity to gain practical experience in programme coordination, knowledge management, partnership support, and communications, while contributing to UNFPA’s mandate areas and ongoing implementation of the Country Programme.

Task Description

Under the direct supervision of the Communications and Advocacy Programme Associate, the UN Associate Volunteer will undertake the following tasks as part of a team: Programme and coordination support Assist programme staff in the coordination of activities across UNFPA thematic areas, including Sexual Reproductive Health and Right (SRHR), gender-based violence prevention and response, youth engagement, and population data initiatives. Support the preparation of meeting agendas, minutes, briefing notes, and background materials for internal and external coordination meetings. Contribute to the organization of workshops, trainings, consultations, and advocacy events, including logistical and administrative arrangements. Knowledge management and reporting Support the compilation of information, success stories, and results from ongoing projects for internal tracking and donor reporting purposes. Assist in maintaining programme files, databases, and documentation in line with UNFPA standards. Contribute to drafting short summaries of programme activities, lessons learned, and visibility materials in the framework of the ongoing EU funded programme on women empowerment. Partnership and communication support Assist in coordination with partners, including government counterparts, civil society organizations, youth networks, and other UN agencies. Support communications efforts by contributing to social media content preparation, translation support (if applicable), and basic design/visual storytelling tasks. Participate in documenting field visits and programme implementation through notes and photos, as relevant. Learning and professional development Participate in team meetings and learning opportunities to build understanding of UNFPA’s mandate, programming approaches, and UN system coordination. Carry out other related support tasks as assigned, ensuring professional growth through mentorship and supervision.

Living conditions Uzbekistan, located in Central Asia, offers a safe and culturally rich environment. Tashkent, the capital, provides modern amenities, affordable living costs, and reliable public transportation, including buses and a metro system. While Uzbek is the official language, Russian is widely spoken. Healthcare is accessible in cities, but comprehensive insurance is advised. The country experiences a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Volunteers are encouraged to respect local customs and traditions for smooth integration.
