Mission and Objectives

As the United Nations lead agency on international development, UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities, and to build resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Our work is concentrated in three focus areas; sustainable development, democratic governance and peace building, and climate and disaster resilience. UNDP’s mandate is to end poverty, build democratic governance, rule of law, and inclusive institutions. We advocate for change, and connect countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. The UNDP Sub-Regional Hub for West and Central Africa (WACA) otherwise known as the Dakar Hub is part of the larger Regional Service Centre for Africa (RSCA) and is situated in Dakar, Senegal. It aims at strengthening resilience and sustainable development in the Sahel and WACA region by accelerating effective implementation of regional initiatives and supporting the 24 UNDP Country Offices in the region. To this effect, the Dakar Hub is well positioned to facilitate partnerships with UN regional representations in the sub-region, Regional Economic Commissions (RECs), regional and sub-regional institutions, research centers and institutes, donor representations, and other international organizations. The Dakar Hub’s offer for the region in spread out into five key areas 1. Governance; 2) Youth; 3) Renewable Energy; 4) Climate Action & 5) Livelihoods, economic recovery, and human mobility in fragile, crisis and post crisis context.

Context

Africa is considered as the most vulnerable continent to disasters. Recurrent disasters across the continent have caused persistent deterioration of livelihoods, pushing people deeper into poverty and food insecurity, and undermining their resilience to future shocks and stresses, with varying impacts on different social groups such as women, children, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. The UNDP “Strengthening Capacities for Disaster Risk Reduction and Adaptation for Resilience in the Sahel Region" (Sahel Resilience Project, 2019–2026), funded by the Government of Sweden, supports seven Sahelian countries—Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, and Senegal—in building institutional capacities for risk‑informed development planning and gender‑responsive resilience building. As part of its knowledge management and dissemination efforts, the Project has developed several technical publications, including the Roadmap for Strengthening Recovery Preparedness in West Africa. The roadmap, developed with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, exists in English, French, and Portuguese versions and will be published as an official UNDP knowledge product. To ensure high‑quality communication and adherence to UNDP editorial standards, UNDP seeks the support of an Online Volunteer to proofread, edit, and check terminology consistency of the Portuguese version of the Roadmap (approx. 36 pages / 10,075 words).

Task Description

The Online Volunteer will support the Sahel Resilience Project by ensuring that the Portuguese version of the Roadmap is accurate, clear, consistent with the English version, professionally written, and ready for publication in line with UNDP standards. The online volunteer is expected to: - Conduct a full proofreading of the Portuguese version (grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax). - Perform editing to improve clarity, coherence, flow, and readability. - Ensure the text aligns with UNDP’s editorial & formatting standards. - Review and harmonize technical terminology based on the English version. - Ensure correct use of DRR, climate resilience, and recovery preparedness terminology. - Ensure consistent layout, headings, numbering, references, acronyms. - Provide one tracked‑changes Word version and one clean final version. - Incorporate UNDP feedback in one review cycle.
