Additional Information

Living conditions and remarks
Dakar is a major diplomatic and regional hub with an established expat community, good availability of housing, and reliable access to services, particularly in neighbourhoods such as Almadies, Mermoz, and Fann. The security situation is assessed as relatively stable; however, opportunistic crime (e.g. pickpocketing, bag snatching, and occasional break‑ins) does occur, especially at night and in popular coastal or restaurant areas, and standard UNDSS security precautions are required. In terms of cost of living, housing represents the main expense for international staff: a furnished one‑bedroom apartment in a preferred area typically ranges from USD 800-1,400 per month, with higher costs for larger or high‑security residences. Food costs are moderate, with local markets and restaurants affordable, while imported goods and dining in international venues are comparatively more expensive; overall, food prices remain significantly lower than in major North American or European cities.
Inclusivity statement
