Mission and objectives
UNDSS's core mission is to enable the safe and effective delivery of UN programs and activities by providing security leadership and solutions.
Safety and Security: UNDSS focuses on ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel and property in the Region, which is crucial for enabling UN operations. Supporting UN Entities: UNDSS works in coordination with various UN agencies, funds, and programmes in the Region, such as OHCHR, UN Women, UNCDF, UNFPA, UNODC, and WHO, to ensure the safe
conduct of their mandates and activities. Humanitarian Assistance: UNDSS supports UN humanitarian operations in the Region, particularly those focused on protecting vulnerable populations and addressing the impact of conflicts and other emergencies.
Security Risk Management: UNDSS utilizes security risk management principles to assess and mitigate threats, ensuring the safety and security of UN operations in the Region.
UNDSS is committed to working with the UN in the Region to achieve its development goals and contribute to a safer and more stable environment
for all.
Context
Given the limited access to certain areas and the urgency of response, Online Volunteers are being mobilized to support UNDSS through social media monitoring and analysis. Through this assignment, we wish to collaborate with Online Volunteers to monitor different online media and social media channels and provide a regular analysis of the situation in the Region. through this online task will support our organization's efforts towards ensuring safety and security of the communities.
The UNDSS in the Region is seeking an Online Volunteer to support the monitoring of open-media sources in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The volunteer will produce daily open-media reports covering geopolitical, security, and safety-related news.
Under the immediate supervision of the UNDSS in the Region, the Online Volunteer will perform:
Daily Media Monitoring:
Produce daily media monitoring reports focusing on the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Submit reports by 12 PM GMT+3:30 from Monday to Friday.
Ensure that reports cover significant geopolitical events, security incidents, and safety-related news relevant to the region.
Weekly Feedback Sessions:
Participate in a weekly online meeting with the supervisor to discuss progress, receive feedback, and address any relevant matters.
Coordinate the exact time and date of meetings based on mutual availability.
Research and Source Utilization:
Utilize local open-media sources, including newspapers, online articles, and other publi-cations in local languages.
Ensure that information is accurate, reliable, and sourced from credible outlets.
Task description
We are seeking the support of Online Volunteers in monitoring different social media and online media channels in both English and Farsi for UNDSS. Under the guidance of the Chief Security Advisor, to this end the Online Volunteers are asked:
- To monitor social media channels in both English and Farsi. Each Online Volunteer will be assigned a different language and specific online media platform to collect and extract key information. The online platform include: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, as well as online media sources (a list will be provided) and provide a regular (or daily) report in English based on the sources.
- For information in Farsi, Online Volunteers will be requested to translate into English.
- Analyse the collected information and provide sound recommendations, especially in the aspect of safety and security, according to the agreed timeline. Selected Online Volunteers will receive proper online induction prior to the assignment

Skills and experience
Technical Skills:
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Prior experience in in safety and security area is required
- Ability to synthesize information from various sources into concise reports is required.
- Familiarity with the geopolitical landscape, culture, and current events of the Region is required.
- Familiarity with humanitarian response, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, international relations or other related areas will be considered an advantage.
- Knowledge of political dynamics and international relationship is desirable.
- Previous communication and social media monitoring experience is considered an asset.
Communication Skills:
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Ability to present information clearly and logically.
Other Requirements:
- Proven motivation and interest in the fields of security and international affairs.
- Access to reliable internet connectivity.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
