What the volunteer will do

Mission and objectives

UNFPA is the lead agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. UNFPA’s new strategic plan (2022-2025), reflects a changing world, and as we accelerate our efforts, transform our pro-grammes, and motivate new partners we will prioritize the needs of people left furthest behind – particularly those living in poverty or with disabilities, LGBTQI+ people and the most vulner-able women, girls and young people. And these results cannot be achieved without an in-creased focus on the rights and inclusive participation of women, adolescents and youth as agents of change. UNFPA remains firmly committed to achieving the three transformative re-sults by 2030 – ending the unmet need for family planning, ending preventable maternal deaths and ending gender-based violence and harmful practices. In order to achieve this bold and ambitious goals, we need to accelerate progress and transform how we do business in light of global changes including megatrends' that have changed the conditions under which we operate.

Context

As the lead United Nations agency dedicated to ensuring every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled, UNFPA is seeking a Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights to join the Pacific Sub-Regional Office (PSRO) in Suva, Fiji. The Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights associate will support the coordination and implementation of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights interventions while fostering collaborative partnerships with national governments and regional stakeholders. As a Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, this role is specifically designed for candidates with limited experience, offering a structured environment for professional growth through mentoring and coaching by the Chief of Health. The volunteer will contribute to the mission by assisting in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights programme management, supporting Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights advocacy, and helping to translate political and social trends into programmatic action.

Living conditions and remarks
Suva is a capital of Fiji, and a regional hub for the Pacific where many UN agencies, embassies and international organizations are located. The city is of relatively small size and easy to get around by taxis. Fiji weather is distinctly tropical and can get hot in the summer but seldom reaches above 35°C (96°F). Trade winds from the east-southeast bring cooling breezes late afternoon and early evening. There is considerable rain in Suva. One to two-bedroom apartments and houses are available in the city centre with hot water and electricity, and many come partially or fully furnished. While most of goods and food items are easily available, the price of imported items can be expensive including home appliances. There is one international school that caters to expatriate children as well as several options for early childhood education institutions. There is reliable, basic health care. However, for surgeries and medical complications, many people choose go to Australia and New Zealand as the closest destination. The city of Suva is generally safe and secure, as long as precautions are exercised. Spouses of UN international staff members are not allowed to work in Fiji.
