What the volunteer will do

Mission and objectives

UNISFA was established in July 2011 under authority of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). UNISFA is mandated to Strengthen the capacity of the Abyei Police Service (APS) by providing support, including the training of personnel, and coordinate with the APS on matters of law and order, Monitor and verify the redeployment of armed forces from the Abyei area in accordance with the 20 June 2011 Agreement, Provide de-mining assistance and technical advice, Facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and free movement of humanitarian personnel in coordination with relevant Abyei Area bodies, When requested and in cooperation with the APS, provide security for oil infrastructure in the Abyei Administrative Area (AAA) and later to organize the referendum The Council also authorized UNISFA under Chapter VII to: - Protect UN Personnel, facilities, installations, and equipment. - Ensure the security and freedom of UN and humanitarian personnel and members of the Joint Military Observers Committee and Joint Military Observer Teams established by the 20 June Agreement. - Protect civilians under imminent threat of physical violence; and protect the Area from incursions by unauthorized elements and ensure security.

Context

Abyei FM community radio is the only reliable source of information for many communities in Abyei. The station promotes peaceful coexistence, civic education, humanitarian awareness and community dialogue. To strengthen its digital presence and engage wider audiences, the station is seeking the support of eight Online Volunteers who will contribute specialized work packages under the guidance of the Station Manager. The assignment will strengthen Abyei FM's ability to communicate effectively with its audiences through sustainable digital communication practices. By contributing specialized knowledge products and communication resources, the Online Volunteers will help the station improve the visibility of its programmes, increase community engagement, and build the long-term capacity of staff to independently manage digital communications. The collaboration will leave the station with practical tools, reusable templates, and documented guidance that will continue to support its work after the assignment concludes. Each Online Volunteer will support a specific component of the assignment by producing clearly defined outputs that strengthen the station's long-term digital communication capacity.

Task description

UNISFA FM Radio is looking for eight volunteers to support the Station Manager in strengthening the radio's content. The volunteers will work im group of two and will do the following tasks: Group 1 – Digital Communications Strategy - Review the station's existing digital communication channels. - Develop a practical Digital Communications Strategy aligned with the station's objectives. - Prepare a six-month content calendar. - Recommend suitable digital platforms based on local connectivity and audience preferences. - Develop simple social media management guidelines. Group 2 – Social Media Content Development - Draft engaging content promoting radio programmes and community initiatives. - Prepare Facebook and WhatsApp posts. - Draft captions for awareness campaigns and public service announcements. - Develop programme promotion messages. - Organize all content into an editable content library. Group 3 – Graphic Design and Branding - Design branded templates for social media. - Develop graphics for programme promotion. - Design templates for awareness campaigns and community events. - Create editable Canva templates that staff can reuse. - Develop basic visual branding guidelines. Group 4 – Capacity Building - Develop practical user guides on managing social media platforms. - Prepare simple guidance on using Canva and free digital communication tools. - Deliver virtual knowledge-sharing sessions for station staff. - Develop simple Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for planning and publishing digital content. - Prepare recommendations for sustaining the station's digital communication activities. Expected Deliverables At the end of the assignment, the Online Volunteers will jointly deliver: Group 1 - One Digital Communications Strategy (8–10 pages). - One six-month content calendar. - One audience analysis. - Recommendations for three priority digital platforms. - One Social Media Management Guide. Group 2 - Thirty Facebook posts. - Twenty WhatsApp announcements. - Fifteen programme promotion captions. - Ten public service messages. - One editable digital content library. Group 3 - Twenty editable Canva templates. - Five awareness campaign posters. - Five programme promotion posters. - Ten quote cards. - One Visual Branding Guide. Group 4 - Two virtual training sessions for station staff. - One Social Media User Guide. - One Canva User Guide. - One Standard Operating Procedure for managing digital platforms. - One Sustainability Recommendations Report.

Applicants should have experience in one or more of the following areas: Communications, Journalism, Social media management, Digital storytelling, Graphic design (Canva or similar tools), Content writing, Media and public information Experience working with community media, humanitarian communication, development communication or peacebuilding initiatives is desirable.
