Mission and Objectives

United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Tokyo (https://www.unic.or.jp/) has been serving as a communication arm of the UN for over 60 years since its establishment in April 1958. From the information shared by the UN Headquarters, UNIC Tokyo selects topics of interest to the Japanese society and distributes them in Japanese. The office translates key documents, such as Secretary-General's messages, press releases, and background documents, which is disseminated through various channels, including websites, e-mail, social media and a blog. UNIC Tokyo also focuses on outreach activities and organizing events for middle and high school students. Other key functions of UNIC Tokyo include organizing press conferences and interviews for the Secretary-General and other senior UN officials visiting Japan and contributing articles to the press on critical issues facing the UN.

Context

UNIC Tokyo has been expanding social media communications to directly reach the Japanese-speaking audience. In line with the guidance and guidelines provided by the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC), UNIC Tokyo runs accounts on X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. The UN Volunteer will be responsible for researching, planning, preparing, disseminating, and analyzing contents on social media in accordance with UNIC Tokyo priorities and Japanese context. Topics covered on social media span from UN core values, international days adopted by the UN, messages by the UN senior officials, activities of UNIC Tokyo including its project to carry on good practices from the UN Pavilion at the EXPO 2025 into the GREENxEXPO in 2027, issues that require urgent actions, such as conflicts, humanitarian issues, and climate change, and any other agenda in the three pillars of the UN, which are peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights. The UN Volunteer will also manage the office’s blog, which is used as a platform to share first-person stories and op-eds by the UN staff and partners. Additionally, the UN Volunteer will support the office’s efforts in strengthening information integrity by monitoring, analyzing and combating the spread of misinformation, disinformation and hate speech on digital platforms. The UN Volunteer will work closely with UNIC Tokyo members and may supervise interns.

Task Description

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Director of the UNIC Tokyo or her/his designated mandated representative(s), the Social Media Officer will: - Research local and global topics to be shared on social media in line with the UN’s guidelines and guidance on the use of social media. - Update and manage editorial calendar of scheduled posts in discussion with relevant UNIC Tokyo member. - Create contents using photos, graphics, and videos provided by the UN system with explanations in texts. - Ensure timely dissemination of content on UNIC Tokyo’s accounts. - Prepare and publish blog articles. - Monitor the result of UNIC Tokyo’s posts and share the analysis with UNIC Tokyo members. - Monitor trends and risks on social media and report the analysis to UNIC Tokyo member. - Monitor trends and risks on information integrity on digital platforms and report the analysis to UNIC Tokyo member. - Supervise intern(s) who will be supporting social media communications. - Coordinate with staff and other colleagues of UNIC Tokyo, staff in the Department of Global Communications, other UN agencies, and non-UN partners to prepare and cross-promote social media contents to reach wider audience. - Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities: - Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance, in events that mark International Volunteer Day); - Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; - Provide annual and end-of-assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities. - Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; - Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; - Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Skills and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area, e.g., journalism, media, communications, sociology, international relations, other social sciences or area related to digital communication or science; - At least 3 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in digital communication, public relations, marketing, and media or other relevant programmes; experience with working in the UN or other international organizations is an asset. - Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in social media (X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube), various MS Office applications (Teams, Excel, Word, etc.), and online analytics tools; and office technology equipment; - Excellent visual editing skills, such as using Illustrator, Photoshop, and Canva; experience with video editing is an asset. - Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; - Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; - Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development. - Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; - Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; - Sound security awareness; - Have affinity with or interest in global issues and SDGs, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

Living conditions and remarks
Tokyo is a megacity that offers diversity in lifestyle and culture. Infrastructure and utilities are stable, such as water, electricity, and an internet connection. Metro, train, and buses span are commonly used transit for daily commute. The average daytime temperature in Tokyo is around 15-20 Celsius degrees from March to May for spring, and June sees the rainy season. July to early September is a hot and humid summer, with the average daytime temperature rising to around 35 Celsius. The temperature drops from late September to see the dry and cool autumn until November. December to February sees a dry winter with daytime temperatures lowering to around 10 Celsius. Japan standard time (JST), uniform throughout the country, is 9 hours ahead of GMT. Entitlements of National UN Volunteer include Entry Lump Sum Allowance, Monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) for the National UN Volunteer Specialist in Tokyo, Japan; Insurance Coverage; Annual Leave of 2.5 days per month; Access to UNV’s learning and career development resources; and Exit Lump Sum Allowance (1-month VLA/12 months) payable upon successful completion of the assignment.
