Mission and objectives
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Seoul Global Office is an extension of WFP's Partnerships and Innovation Department in its headquarters in Rome. It plays a key role in managing WFP's partnerships across all sectors in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Originally established as an outpost office in 2005, it became a full-fledged global office in 2011, with a primary focus on strengthening WFP-ROK strategic collaboration and mobilizing resources for WFP's operations worldwide.
WFP is the world's largest humanitarian organization, saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability, and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change. Powered by the passion, dedication, and professionalism of 23,000 staff worldwide, WFP has a presence in over 120 countries and territories to deliver its mission. In recognition of its contributions to peace and prosperity for the world, WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020.
The partnership between the ROK and WFP is a remarkable story of transformation - from being a recipient of WFP's food assistance in the aftermath of the Korean War to becoming one of WFP's top five government donors in 2024. This journey reflects the ROK's commitment to ending hunger and humanitarian action. Since 2022, WFP has designated two Korean goodwill ambassadors: Son Heung-min as a WFP Global Goodwill Ambassador, and Chef Yoo Hyun-su as a national WFP Chef Advocate.
