Mission and objectives
UNDSS is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the security management system with the strategic aim of enabling the safest and most efficient conduct of mandated programmes and activities of the UN system worldwide.
Context
The Insight and Accountability Unit (IAU) within the Office of the Chief of Staff, under the Office of the Under-Secretary-General (OUSG) at UNDSS Headquarters, is leading a research-based initiative on Early Warning System Development. This initiative aligns with the principles of UN 2.0 and the UNDSS Digital Transformation Strategy. This assignment supports the development and internal pilot of Early Warning System Development research, leveraging machine learning tools, techniques, and best practices.
Task description
We are seeking support from an online volunteer to contribute to the development of an Early Warning Analysis system.
The online volunteer will support research on publicly available datasets based on concept notes. The volunteer will assist in dataset consolidation (as needed), exploratory data analysis, and the design, training, and evaluation of the model. The task may also include developing data visualizations and dashboards to present key insights.
The final deliverable will include analytical outputs and a written report supported by visualizations, contributing to the project’s knowledge base and documentation.

Skills and experience
- Good understanding of machine learning principles, data analysis techniques, and report preparation.
- Background in data science, research, analytics, or technical documentation is considered an added advantage.
- Hands-on experience in dataset preparation, data preprocessing, or model development is desirable.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Power Platform tools (such as Power BI) is beneficial.
- Previous involvement in data-driven projects, research studies, or analytical initiatives is an asset.
- Strong proficiency in English, both written and verbal, is essential.
