What the volunteer will do
Mission and objectives
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) works in around 170 countries and territories to reduce poverty, address inequality, and strengthen countries’ ability to manage shocks and sustain progress. As the UN’s lead development agency, UNDP supports countries not only in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, but also in advancing related national, regional and global commitments on climate action, governance, resilience, and economic development. UNDP provides policy advice, technical assistance, and capacity building, and plays a key role in connecting governments with international knowledge, resources, and partnerships. A particular focus is placed on supporting Least Developed Countries to strengthen institutions, improve livelihoods, and build long‑term development pathways.
UNDP has been present in Mozambique since 1976, working with the Government to advance national development priorities. The country programme focuses on accelerating structural transformation, promoting inclusive growth, and addressing systemic risks, ensuring that no one is left behind. Core priorities include supporting economic diversification and sustainable livelihoods, strengthening resilience to climate and economic shocks, and promoting inclusive governance and social cohesion. The programme places particular emphasis on reducing poverty and inequality, advancing gender equality, and creating opportunities for women, youth, and other groups facing persistent barriers. It also supports efforts to reduce the country’s vulnerability to natural hazards and to ensure the sustainable management of natural resources.
