Additional information

Living conditions and remarks
Santiago, Chile, is a modern and relatively safe city compared to other capitals in the region, although, as in any large urban area, petty crime can occur and standard security precautions are advised. The city has good international and domestic air connectivity through Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport, as well as an extensive public transportation system including metro, buses, and taxis. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, wetted winters. Air quality can be a concern during winter months due to pollution. Chilean culture is generally open and welcoming, with a professional work environment; business attire is standard in formal settings, and social norms are similar to other Latin American countries. Alcohol is legally available and commonly consumed in social settings, with moderation expected. The cost of living in Santiago is relatively high for the region, particularly in terms of housing. A range of accommodation options is available, from shared apartments to individual rentals, though prices vary significantly by neighborhood. Food, water, and electricity are widely available and reliable. Supermarkets and local markets offer a good variety of products. Medical facilities in Santiago are of high quality, with both public and private healthcare services available. Banking services are well developed, with widespread access to ATMs, online banking, and international financial services. Telecommunications infrastructure is strong, with reliable internet and mobile coverage across the city. Chile hosts several United Nations entities, including the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and various regional and country offices, making it an important hub for UN operations in the region. It provides an interesting and enriching professional and cultural environment; however, it also requires a good level of adaptability, cultural awareness, and personal organization to manage living costs and navigate urban life effectively.
