Mission and Objectives

UNICEF is a key UN agency working in Somalia in various aeras such as WASH, Child Protection, Social Policy, Health and Nutrition, and Education sectors. With a population of 3,798,828 people and a significant youth and adolescent proportion forming a huge youth bulge, Somalia faces an unprecedented challenge in addressing the youth and adolescent needs of the people in a complex context where conflict, natural disasters and climate change divert resources from the needs of this important cohort of the population. The unemployment rate is high (estimated at 50%) that also contributes to poverty.

Additional Information

Living conditions and remarks
Mogadishu International staff in Mogadishu typically reside in high-security compounds that provide 24/7 guarded access, perimeter protection, controlled movement, and secure accommodation due to the city’s volatile security context and ongoing conflict-related risks. These compounds generally offer furnished rooms or small apartments, supported by private services such as generators, water supply, sanitation, and on site maintenance, as essential utilities in Mogadishu are predominantly delivered through private providers and can be costly or inconsistent. Expatriate living arrangements include access to catering or shared dining, reliable internet, and basic medical support, though any serious health needs often require medical evacuation due to limited local healthcare capacity. Living outside secure compounds is not feasible for international personnel because of tenure insecurity and widespread forced evictions affecting many neighborhoods. Overall, living arrangements are designed to ensure safety, limit exposure, and provide essential services in a high risk operational
